Single Parent Dating
Tips & Advice
Going online is probably the best way for a single parent to find new
friends and, eventually, new romance. You can avoid most of the potential
mistakes and problems by applying a little common sense to the situation,
and of course by listening to your "inner voice" whenever it has something
to say.
First and foremost, try never to spring any big surprises on your kids - if
they are old enough to understand, chat to them informally, tell them what
you are thinking of doing and why, explain how it could be of benefit to all
of you as a family, and reassure them that, no matter what happens, they
will always come first in your life. Be positive and upbeat, and the chances
are they will go along with you and give you their support.
When writing your profile, be scrupulously honest. Take the time to explain
your own situation, and the qualities you hope to find in your prospective
partner. But don't come across as self-pitying or pessimistic. After all,
you're not the only one in the single parent boat!
When you meet someone new it should be in a public place or as part of a
group activity. Get to know them purely as a friend before you even consider
dating them. Once you are happy with their character and their attitude
towards family life, it's time to invite them into your home and gradually
introduce them to your children. With a little luck, fun days out and
family-oriented activities will establish lasting bonds, and bring about the
quality of life you so desire.
